Read your own homepage as if you'd never heard of your business. Within five seconds, would you know what you sell, who it's for and why it's better? For most businesses the honest answer is no. That's a positioning problem, and it's one of the cheapest to fix.
Why jargon costs money
Phrases like "end-to-end solutions", "best-in-class" and "leveraging synergies" feel safe because everyone uses them. That's exactly the problem. They make you sound like everyone else, so buyers default to the cheapest option or the one they've heard of.
A simple positioning method
- Name the customer. Be specific. "Owner-run trade businesses with 5 to 50 staff" beats "SMEs".
- Name the problem in their words. Listen to sales calls and enquiries. Customers say "our quotes take forever", not "we need workflow optimisation".
- Name the result. What's different after they work with you? Time, money, confidence, growth.
- Name your reason to believe. Why should they trust you? Experience, proof, a method, a guarantee.
Test it
Put your sentence in front of five real customers or prospects. If they repeat it back in their own words, it works. If they ask "so what do you actually do?", go again.
Use it everywhere
Once it works, it becomes your website headline, the first line of your proposals, your social bio and your answer when someone asks what you do. Consistency turns a sentence into a reputation.
Positioning for international buyers
If you sell across borders, plain language matters even more. Many of your buyers will read English as a second language, and local slang or industry shorthand won't travel. Short sentences and concrete outcomes work everywhere.
